The energy landscape is changing fast. The path to a fossil fuel-free energy landscape demands innovative solutions. To meet the ambitious climate goals and reduce CO2 emissions, the future will rely increasingly on renewable energy sources. However, the current energy infrastructure and market mechanisms lead to more and more shutdowns of wind farms and solar fields, leading to a waste of renewable energy generation capacity. This where we step in: we store energy. We use compressed air as energy storage medium. Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) is an existing technology that stores energy as compressed air. The idea is simple: on sunny and windy days when there is too much supply of renewable energy, we use the excess electricity to drive a compressor. The compressor compresses air into a storage unit. When the demand for energy is higher than the supply, we open the storage unit. The air will expand and drive a generator that produces electricity to the grid. You can read more about how it works here.

We store energy underground We store energy in our specially designed underground storage facilities. Our subsurface vessels store compressed air until it is released for power generation. What makes our solution different?
  • Our underground storage has a small footprint;
  • We use well known and proven technologies, making our solutions low-risk and easy to operate and maintain;
  • Our solution mainly uses materials that can be 100% recycled;
  • We produce heat and cold in our production cycle which can be distributed to customers requiring heat or cold.
  • We enhance renewable energy By storing the excess renewable energy that is generated on windy and/or sunny days and realeasing it when there is a deand for it, we enhance the share of renewable energy in the energy mix and enable maximum use of the existing wind and solar electricity generation. Our storage solution helps in preventing congestion in the power grid. Depending on whether there is a supply or a demand that is bigger than the power grid can handle at that time, we can consume or supply electricity. This way we solve congestion issues on a power grid. Our energy storage solution is able to connect to locally generated renewable sources and can supply heat to local heat networks (“warmtenet” ). It can also connect to local industrial infrastructure and supply and absorb cold and heat. By connecting different forms of energy supply and demand we enhance local energy systems.
